We arrived at about 7.30 and after a little asking about, took the train to Landungsbrücken station, followed the crowd and managed to find our way to the harbour..
The Hamburg Fish market is truly the highlight of our Hamburg trip! Lots of different stuff on sale and groceries are auctioned off instead of simply sold! There were lots of crazy vendors shouting, singing and one even squeezing oranges to show how juicy they were =) Very colourful, very loud, very local!
Wei Sing and i were looking at T-shirts when we realised we lost the rest of them.. so we ventured on our own, and found this indoor market place that had a rock band playing live music! Its a Sunday morning and these Germans are drinking beer and listening to a band.. Excellent!
And so we left the fish market and went ahead with our tour of the city.. Now it was seriously getting cold and windy.. and we had to duck in and out of buildings every 15 mins to warm our fingers
If Bremen is the City of Trams, Hamburg must be the City of Bridges.. there were lots of them.. Wikipedia says that there are 2300 bridges spanning the many canals.. more than Amsterdam and Venice combined!
The tallest buildings in the city seem to be the churches. Historically, there are 5 Principal Churches and i'm glad to say we managed to cover all 5 in a day! Pictures will be in chronological order though.. 2 before lunch and 3 after lunch =)
We spent quite some time in the Town Hall because it was warm inside.. haha.. then decided to go for lunch.. it wasn't as easy as we thought, because we only saw 1 open restaurant! No choice.. thankfully the food was pretty good.. especially the desserts.. Of coz i had to try another type of German Beer.. which was good again =)
The sun came up and the weather became much more bearable. We even tried to do the standard jump shot thingy.. which attracted many curious German stares.. Apparently Germans don't do that?? haha.. Well the German guy who were helping us take a picture failed terribly.. and after several attempts.. the coolest shot we got is the one below.. I call it the Power Ranger Pose..
"It's Morphin time!"
another embarrassing video...
On the way to the St Michaelis Church, we saw this playground.. and i couldn't resist the temptation to slide..
another embarrassing video...
Night fell and we took a walk through the famous (or infamous) Reeperbahn. A long stretch full of Restaurants, Nightclubs, Bars, Strip Clubs and Sex Stores etc etc.. This "colourful" stretch was too scary for me to take pictures haha.. or rather i didn't think that any pictures i take can be shown on this blog! Anyway.. here is western liberalisation for you..
Hamburg is a really big, busy, industrialised city. For me the much hyped about harbour was kinda overated, it was like going to Pasir Panjang to see PSA containers and cranes.. =) But the Fisch Market was truly something to behold. Maybe its because i came on a Sunday, but i felt that the city lacks a warm touch. Something that i felt really strongly in Bremen..
I hope visitors to Singapore won't say things like: "Oh its a nice developed place.. clean n efficient.. but nothing about it stands out for me.."
And so it was our last night in Germany.. so we decided to hang out in the hostel lounge to watch TV in German.. and of coz.. also to try more German Beer.. haha..
